Primary English; termly courses for our home educated students

Our Primary home-schooling courses have been designed to cover Years 3-4 and Years 5-6 of the English National Curriculum (Key Stage 2) in both writing and grammar. They’re open to children of all abilities and they provide a strong foundation for later learning in an enjoyable and stress free environment.

Termly Courses

There are 3 termly courses split over the year to mimic a school term: Autumn, Spring and Summer.

The Autumn course consists of 6 weekly 90 minute sessions running from 1/11. The Spring course consists of 12 weeks and the Summer course consists of 10 weeks.

All courses will include an assessment in both writing and grammar in the final week. Writing will be assessed against the Teacher Assessment Framework (TAF) with a written Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) test at the end of the course. This is in line with national guidance in teacher assessment and will be a valuable indicator of where your child is performing well and any areas of weakness.

Each course is designed around a particular theme and is fully immersive, allowing your child to explore depth of language, grammar and spelling appropriate for their age group. Within each course, we will focus on one main piece of fiction writing while mixing in some shorter non-fiction pieces, to ensure a variety of genres are covered.

Courses for years 3-4

Autumn course 1: Myths (6 weeks)

During this course we will be looking at variety of mythical stories and exploring how they differ from modern fiction. We will have a go at creating and describing our own mythical creatures, and writing creatively; drawing inspiration from classical literary works (such as Theseus and the minotaur) and from modern fiction (such as How to train your dragon).

Spring course 2: Mystery (12 weeks)

During this course, we will be focusing on how to use language skills to create atmosphere and build tension. Again, drawing on inspiration from a variety of text resources we will explore vocabulary, experiment with sentence structure and punctuation to produce a short story in the style of a suspense thriller.

Summer course 3: (10 weeks)
